William Luo

William is a Master of Professional Psychology student at the Australian National University. He holds a bachelor’s degree with a background in psychology and philosophy.

His long-term aim is to contribute to reducing unnecessary non-material suffering. While the exact form this work may take is still unfolding, he is committed to finding a path that bridges research and wisdom to create meaningful impact. He hopes to explore how enduring ideas from ancient wisdom traditions, particularly those concerning virtue, character, and human flourishing, can be brought into dialogue with modern psychological research to address emerging challenges in the age of AI.

As part of the 2026 Master of Professional Psychology research team in the Precision Lab, William is researching methods for detecting careless responding in psychological research. His work involves comparing existing detection approaches and helping to develop brief, open-source validity scales that researchers can append to online surveys to identify inconsistent and low-effort responding. By improving the reliability and quality of psychological data, he hopes this work can contribute to more accurate psychological research and, ultimately, to a better understanding of the people and problems psychology seeks to address, so that efforts to help others are grounded in sound evidence rather than flawed evidence and assumptions from the outset.
