Universality of the triangular theory of love: Adaptation and psychometric properties of the triangular love scale in 25 countries

Summary

This study tested whether Sternberg's triangular theory of love, and its associated Triangular Love Scale, generalises across cultures. The authors adapted the scale and examined its psychometric properties in samples drawn from 25 countries. Analyses supported the cross-cultural validity of the three love components (intimacy, passion, and commitment) and the overall structure of the instrument. Levels of the love components varied with relationship duration in ways consistent with the predictions of the triangular theory. The findings provide evidence for the cultural universality of the theoretical construct and offer a validated multi-language measure of love for future research.
